How to Treat Your Neck?

Text neck is an injury you get from holding your neck in a downward position for too long. It is most often caused by looking down to text too much but it can also come from looking down at an iPad, laptop or other devices. Text neck is very painful. I have personally had text neck and had to seek medical treatment for it. These are some of the secrets of recovering from it.
Shift Your Phone

If you use your phone or other electronic device a lot, you need to hold it higher to prevent text neck. Move your phone upward so that you don’t have to bend your neck. Holding it more in front of you than downward saves you from holding your neck down for too long. It takes a bit of adjusting to get used to this but it is very helpful. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Practice Good Posture

Good posture is a huge factor in preventing and treating text neck. It is easy to get into the habit of slouching and not sitting or standing correctly. This is something you have to retrain yourself to do. It will take time to retrain yourself to use correct posture. A helpful hint is to place a rolled up towel behind your lower back when you are sitting at your desk to nudge you in the direction of good posture. A good reminder to give yourself is to hold your head up and your shoulders back.

Take an anti-Inflammatory Medication

An anti-inflammatory medication can help relieve pain and inflammation. NSAIDS are a better choice for this injury than regular Tylenol is. Tylenol can help with pain but not with inflammation. Instead of sitting on your comfy couch, you probably need to move to a desk or table. This move should raise your laptop up a bit. 5. Try Some Ice or Heat

Ice or heat can be very helpful in dealing with text neck. Some doctors say to alternate both so you will have to check with yours. I personally found ice to be most effective when I was dealing with the worst of my text neck. My doctor explained that this was because ice temporarily reduces blood flow to the area, giving you some relief. Nut eaters are consistently leaner than those who don't enjoy nuts, plus unsaturated fats and antioxidants from nuts help fend off heart disease and Type 2 Diabetes. When choosing nut butters, opt to grind your own, or buy the natural or organic options that have only two ingredients — nuts and salt.

Mustards

Mustards are much more than a sandwich spread. Mustards come from the cruciferous mustard greens plant, which helps temper inflammation and has both anticancer and heart-health benefits. I always have yellow, stone-ground, and Dijon mustards to add kick to meats as well as to make homemade salad dressings.
Sauces

Honey, Maple Syrup, and Molasses

Many simple recipes call for a bit of sweetener, and the added sugars I use are those that have beneficial antioxidants and other bioactive compounds that may improve health. Although all sweeteners pack in 16-20 calories per teaspoon and should be limited, my pantry always has pure honey, maple syrup, and molasses to use in moderation.

As a personal trainer, I have plenty of tips for a healthy halloween to help you like these:
1. Hand out Healthier Swaps

To avoid a chocolate filled pantry becoming your biggest weakness, purchase healthier swaps this year like granola bars and animal crackers. You can even get some small toys to hand out to younger children. You can become a hit without handing out unhealthy treats if you just get a little creative. 2. If You Have to Buy Candy do It Later

If candy seems to be the only goal on most of the neighborhood kids minds this Halloween you can purchase some chocolate, but avoid the gummies as they destroy teeth. 3. Get Candy You do Not like

4. Keep the Faves and Donate the Rest

5. Avoid the Candy Aisles

For the two months prior to Halloween, avoid the candy aisles or any other tempting areas of the store that are laden with an array of candy. If you can avoid these areas, it will be much easier to stay healthy and leave the store without candy in your grocery #bag!

6. Size Matters

When you do choose to have some #candy, just remember that size matters. Use portion control and choose the mini version of your favorite treat, it will be a fraction of the calories with all the taste. Milk industry claims cow's milk results in weight loss; bad sciencemeets dishonest marketing

The milk industry has launched a full court press to hype the supposed weight loss benefits of drinking milk. They're running print ads, hiring celebrities to wear goofy-looking milk moustaches, and paying nutritionists to give distorted speeches about the benefits of milk. The problem is, there's absolutely no convincing evidence that milk helps with weight loss at all. In fact, all the evidence about cow's milk shows it to be a nutritional disaster for the human body: it's missing essential oils necessary for brain function, it lacks critical minerals (like magnesium) needed for the human body, and worst of all, practically all human beings are allergic to cow's milk, which is why the substance causes so much asthma, chronic sinus infections, and constipation.

But don't let scientific facts stand in the way of a national marketing campaign. The milk industry is out to sell some milk, regardless of the facts. That's what I call bad science mixed with dishonest marketing. Granted, if children switch from drinking soft drinks to milk, they will very likely lose weight, but "milk" isn't the reason: it's the fact that they've avoided soft drinks. The same children would lose even more weight if they drank pure water instead of milk. Cow's milk isn't a weight loss substance. In fact, thanks to its homogenized fat content and difficult-to-digest proteins, it's actually something that tends to pack on the pounds.

Still, the milk marketing machine will conveniently neglect to mention the facts surrounding nutritional reality and, instead, focus on a five-second soundbite that goes something like this, "Kids who drank more milk lost weight!" And from that, the public will arrive at the erroneous conclusion that milk is good for them.

The number of cases of asthma, chronic sinus infections, cardiovascular disease and chronic constipation caused each year by the consumption of cow's milk must be staggering. Even beyond that, how many infant deaths are caused by cow's milk consumption? At the very least, it is well known that cow's milk causes tens of thousands of ear infections in infants each year, and many of those lead to further complications that compromise the child's health down the road.

My advice is that all human beings should avoid the milk of another species. Anthropologists have found absolutely no evidence that ancient man sucked on the teats of furry animals. Yuck!

Water before meals helps with weight loss

Weight loss techniques are a dime a dozen these days, with experts touting all sorts of different diet and exercise regimens as the solution to obesity. But new research set to be presented at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) offers a simple approach that involves no drugs and has no negative side effects. According to researchers, drinking two glasses of water before each meal will help you to lose more weight.

"We are presenting results of the first randomized controlled intervention trial demonstrating that increased water consumption is an effective weight loss strategy," explained Brenda Davy, Ph.D., senior author of the study, to reporters." In this recent study, we found that over the course of 12 weeks, dieters who drank water before meals, three times per day, lost about five pounds more than dieters who did not increase their water intake."


The philosophy behind the "water cure" suggests that by consuming more water, there is less room in the stomach for food. So in essence, the zero-calorie beverage takes the place of food, which results in less calorie consumption and less additional pounds. However, all participants in the study ate low-calorie foods as part of the study -- and all lost some weight. But those who drank water before their meals lost more than those who did not.

Researchers also noted that water is better than sodas and other sweetened beverages that are loaded with sugar or artificial sweeteners. These additives contribute heavily to weight gain, so dieters would do best to nix these drinks from their diets and drink plenty of water instead.

"It is a good idea for people on weight loss programs to support their liver function with high-fiber foods and liquids. Consumption of six to eight glasses of liquids is necessary each day to maintain the water content of bile. Pure water or fresh fruit and vegetable juices are the preferred ways to meet your body's water requirements," explain Michael Murray, N.D., and Joseph Pizzorno, N.D., in their book The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods.

In fact, people who took in at least 214 milligrams of calcium from dairy each day faced a 17 percent lower risk of obesity than those who didn't eat dairy. The simplest explanation: The mineral may increase the amount of fat excreted in your waste. (Calcium may also play a more complicated role in the actions of hormones related to weight.)

So skip the calcium supplements, and start snacking on (or sipping) low-fat dairy when you need a little afternoon pick-me-up. It's a double-whammy against obesity: The shot of protein will help keep you full, and the calcium may keep you slim.

Milk, in particular, was a major factor affecting the size of people's waists: Daily milk drinkers were significantly less likely to be obese than non-drinkers—an association that only applied to women. The caveat? There was a BMI benefit only when the milk contained less than 3.4 percent fat (read: whole milk won't help you).

7 Women Who Went beyond Being Beauty Queens

Beauty queens are one of the most stereotyped group of people in this earth. They are often labelled as "beauty sans the brains" instead of "beauty and brains." Add that to the fact that in the entire equation, one equally important part is missing: the heart or the compassion towards other people. Most beauty queens fulfill their duties doing humanitarian and charitable work during their reign. I am not a fan of that. I usually look at these winners five years after their reign and check if they really are doing something for society. Here are seven women who went beyond being beauty queens and truly did something significant for society:
1. Sushmita Sen

Sushmita from India is one of my favorite beauty queens. She won Miss Universe 1994 as a teenager and has grown to be a woman of substance. She adopted two girls (Renee and Alisah) and proudly calls herself a happy, single mother even when society frowned at her decision. She is an example to all young women and even current and former beauty queens that good works should continue even when the camera is not on you.

2. Halle Berry

She won first runner-up in Miss USA 1986 and represented her country in Miss World 1986, where she finished as 5th runner up. From her beauty pageant background, this African-American beauty stormed Hollywood with her acting talent and went on to win an Academy Award for Best Actress for her movie, Monster’s Ball.

3. Vanessa Williams

She won Miss America in 1986 but later relinquished her crown because of a nude photo controversy on Penthouse magazine. Vanessa didn't let this get in her way of success though and later made a successful comeback and hit it off in the music and film industries. I love how she sang Colors of the Wind!

4. Margie Moran-Floirendo

She won Miss Universe 1973 in Athens, Greece representing The Philippines but she didn't stop there. Margarita is known in the social development circle for her works in promoting peace and livelihood in Mindanao, Southern Philippines. She also advocates the promotion of arts and culture and is currently president of Ballet Philippines.

5. Aishwarya Rai

Another Indian beauty who proved to the world that there is more to be done after winning a title. Aside from being one of Bollywood's highest-paid actress, Miss World 1994 Aishwarya Rai supports several humanitarian works including the Eye Bank Association of India. In mid-2000, she spearheaded the creation of her own foundation dedicated to help India's poor people. She became part of Smile Train that offers free cleft lip and palate surgery to children. She is also a UN ambassador to raise awareness on protecting children from HIV infection.

6. Anna Maris Igpit

Anna represented The Philippines in Miss World 2006 but failed to clinch the crown. She went on to do community projects in her hometown,the island-province of Bohol. One of her most notable works is her involvement in helping the people of Bohol after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the province on October 15, 2013. Anna has helped raised funds for classroom and shelter reconstruction and obtaining relief goods for disaster survivors.

7. Dayanara Torres
Before this Puerto Rican beauty married and later divorced Grammy-award winner Marc Anthony, she was Miss Universe 1993. She established a name for herself as an actress and dance performer in The Philippines for five years before going back to Puerto Rico. She provided scholarships to poor but deserving students in The Philippines and participated in various fundraising events. She continues to support McDonald House Charities and California's Covenant House, among others.

Clear Channel Using Humor and Hollywood for Heart Disease Awareness

On Valentine’s Day, millions of women will give candy hearts to their sweeties and doodle hearts in cards, but won’t pay attention to their own tender tickers. Heart disease is the number one killer of adults in America. President Obama has already dubbed February – American Heart Month. In an effort to raise awareness, Clear Channel Communications is releasing a series of public service announcements (PSA) to educate the public about the risk factors of cardiovascular disease  , and how to spot the warning signs of a heart attack or stroke.


Clear Channel, in collaboration with The American Heart Association, has committed one million dollars worth of on-air media to spread awareness. For the next two weeks, a portion of Clear Channel’s 840 radio stations across the country will air a humorous PSA voiced by actress, Elizabeth Banks that highlights the signs of a heart attack in women. Other stations will hear a PSA created by the Ad Council listing the warning signs of a stroke.

This isn’t the first time Banks has lent her talent for heart disease education. In 2011, she directed and starred in the short film, “Just a Little Heart Attack,” for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women campaign. The video (below) quickly went viral because it spoke to busy women and mothers across the country who insist, “I just don’t have time for a heart attack.”

5 Healthy Snacks to Eat on the Way Home from the Grocery Store

So, you're really not supposed to go to the grocery store while you're hungry; studies have shown that shoppers end up buying more high-calorie foods when their bellies are rumbling. (Anecdotal evidence from—well, me—is that my "must buy a big bag of chips and jar of queso" reflex goes up substantially when I haven't eaten recently.)

But when your fridge is close to bare, we've all found ourselves grocery shopping on an empty stomach...which can quickly translate into must-eat-food-now-itis after checking out. Here are some good ideas for portable snacks you can eat on the way home from the store.

Roasted seaweed: This is my favorite, right now—it's crunchy and flavorful enough to feel like you're eating ships. Plus, it's filled with vitamins A, B-6, and C, and fiber.

Dried Fruit: It's easy to eat, right? But it's also good for you (if you pick the right kind): a study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that the antioxidants in dried grapes (a.k.a., raisins), grapes, and plums are twice as potent as those found in their fresh-fruit counterparts. Just make sure your dried-fruit package contains no sweeteners; in the ingredient list, only the fruit should be listed.

Jerky: Natural, lightly-flavored, and low-sodium beef or turkey jerky are your best bets—they contain about 9 g of filling protein.

Low-fat chocolate milk: Grab a carton that's low in sugar, and you've got a sippable snack that's filled with protein and calcium (and is also thought to be especially good post-workout).

Olives: Lots of grocery stores have olive bars that have loads of fresh olives, fresh mozzarella, roasted garlic, and more. Grab a container and toss in some olives in it—they're rich in vitamin E, fiber, iron, and copper—and they're super-easy to eat on the go.

Wow, what this woman to do in the gym

When I first saw the headline for this story, I thought: "Maybe they was wearing super-revealing clothing?" But...nope.
Tiffany Austin says that they was told by a gym staff member about 15 minutes in to her workout that they needed to cover upa??because the gym had "some complaints [she] was intimidating people with toned body."

Austin says he was wearing workout pants as well as a tank top that exposed a quantity of her stomach, but that he didn't feel it was revealing (here's the outfit in query). Still, he was apparently told that the tank top violated the gym's dress code owner. He told the staff member that he would be happy to put a gym-provided shirt over the tank top, but decided to hightail it out of the facility after another staff member told her he needed to cover up as he was waiting to put it on.
Austin had joined the gym, and this marked her first workout there. After the event, they decided to ask for her membership money back.

You see so lots of different kinds of workout apparel at the gyma??I mean, I have seen everything from little leotards to full-on baggy sweatsuits. and not violating a facility's dress code is definitely thing...but asking someone to wear more clothes because he was "too toned" is definitely not something I have ever heard before.
