TEACH YOU HOW TO EAT BUFFET HAPPIER

If you're watching what you eat, buffets are the ultimate in mixed emotions. You're excited, you're determined, and at the same time, you're hungry! I'm here to guide you through the food minefield that is an all-you-can-eat buffet.

There's an entire table of pastas! What to do? If possible, position yourself at a table far away from the food, in a chair that's facing away from the buffet tables. This way, you'll be less focused on all that food while you dine.

Take a lap, plate free. The first time you walk around the buffet tables, do it without a plate. Scope out the entire food situation before you grab anything.  Now you can plan what (if anything) is worth splurging on and keep the rest on the healthy side.

With a plan firmly in mind, grab a plate. Go ahead and plan on taking up to two trips to the buffet line. (It is a buffet, after all -- more than one trip is kinda the point.) But here's the catch: On the first trip, you've gotta fill your plate three-quarters with healthy picks. Use the final portion of your plate for small helpings of your favorite, more-decadent foods. Portion control is so important...

Round two? Before you go for seconds, drink a full glass of water, and wait five minutes. (Go on; set your phone timer.) You might be surprised to discover you're actually full.

Still hungry? Head back up, but stick strictly to the sensible stuff.

Danger zones. Buffets can be a scary place for calorie counters -- not only because of their mind tricks ("It's all you can eat… I have to get my money's worth!”), but because of the plethora of bad-for-you foods. Resist anything fried; avoid the shiny, oily vegetables; walk right past the mayo-heavy side dishes like coleslaw and potato salad; and don't waste your calories on bread and butter. And keep in mind, even salads can be scary if you load them up with the wrong stuff -- just say no to greasy croutons, fried tortilla strips, and excessive amounts of full-fat dressing and cheese. Get more info on surprisingly fattening foods here.

Best bets. Congratulations! You just said no to the fried-chicken station! Now walk over to the non-fried-chicken station. Lean proteins like grilled chicken, smoked salmon, and lean beef are all good options. And remember that one healthy-eating advantage of a buffet is that you can see your food before you order it. Anything that looks like it's floating in butter probably is. Another point for buffets? They're often loaded with fruits and veggies -- relieve the produce table of its burden and put some of 'em on your plate. Broth-based soup is also a strong choice – it's low in calories, filling, and takes awhile to eat. P.S. If it's a Chinese buffet, check out this HG Survival Guide.

Fill up on liquids. Take advantage of the unlimited beverages, and sip on sparkling water, unsweetened iced tea, coffee, and hot tea. (I've given advice on how to increase your daily water intake, maybe I should add “go to a buffet” to my list... Kidding!)

Don't let your eating partners lead you astray. This is important to keep in mind any time you're eating with pals, but it's especially key at a buffet. Just because they grab fourths doesn't mean you need to. If everyone else is still eating and you don't want to miss out on the munching, grab some fresh fruit with a cup of coffee. Think about how proud of yourself you're going to be when you're leaving the buffet.

Milli Loses 100 Pounds

Name:  Milli Momo
Age: 33
Height: 5'4”
Before: 250 lbs.
After: 145 lbs.
What was the turning point that prompted you to lose weight?
I had struggled with my weight my entire life. On my wedding day, I weighed 180 pounds. After that, I started letting myself go. I ate whatever I wanted and was not active at all. I kept making excuses for myself while ignoring the changes I was seeing in the mirror. I had not weighed myself in years, so I decided to buy a scale. When I finally had enough courage to step on, I was shocked to see my weight. After three years of marriage, my weight had skyrocketed to 250 pounds! I was considered morbidly obese. How did this happen? I was mortified, depressed, and so disappointed in myself. I decided that day to make a change.

When did you start trying to lose weight?
I started immediately — the very same day that I weighed myself. They had just built a new fitness center in my community and my husband wanted to join, so I joined, too.
I realized that I was consuming almost 4,000 calories per day – about double what an average person should be eating. I instantly cut my calorie intake. After the first week, I had lost 5 pounds! This was so motivating, and it inspired me to keep going. I did research on how to burn calories and eat right. I became more determined as I saw more progress.

What was your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge by far was changing the way I ate. It was literally like a detox for me. I ate a lot of fast food with no regard for the calories it contained. I had to learn how to control portion sizes and limit calories. I also learned that I was an emotional eater. I would eat to soothe anger, anxiety, and fear. This is still a challenge today. However, I taking Lida Diet Pills  and counting calories gives me a formula to follow so it's easier to know when I have had enough.

Were there any times when you wanted to quit or give up? How did you stay motivated?
There were definitely times when I wanted to quit. At my halfway point, it started getting harder to lose the weight. I even plateaued for a few weeks. What kept me motivated was looking at pictures of when I first started and thinking about how far I had come. I would also read other people's weight loss success stories and get inspired by them. I would tell myself, "If they can do it, I can do it!”

If you reached a weight loss plateau, how did you break out of the rut?
When I hit my plateau, I learned a very valuable lesson. I actually had to increase my calories in order to keep losing weight. I did some research and found out that sometimes our bodies will go into starvation mode and end up holding on to fat if we aren't feeding it enough. I was so motivated that I was working out twice a day and still only eating 1,200 calories. I had to take my calories up to 1,500. I also broke up my meals into smaller portions throughout the day, so I that was eating four to five small meals. This worked for me, along with making sure I varied my exercise routine.

What's your current exercise routine?
I work out six days a week for about one hour. I do something different every day because I don’t want my body to get used to doing the same thing. Some days I take cardio kickboxing, others I take a dance class, and sometimes I just run on the treadmill. This also keeps exercise from getting boring.

What's your daily diet look like?
I generally have protein and carbs for breakfast to fuel me for the day. Turkey sausage and toast would be a standard breakfast for me. For lunch, I typically have 3/4 cup of pasta with grilled chicken or a grilled chicken sandwich and a ½ cup of low-fat ice cream. For dinner, I like to have fish, like tilapia, and broccoli, and if I have enough calories left, ½ cup of low-fat ice cream for dessert. For me, portion control and knowing how many calories I am eating and burning is what helps me stay fit.

What’s your favorite healthy snack and meal?
My favorite healthy snack is a cup of grapes. They are sweet and so good when they are cold! My favorite healthy meal is tilapia and broccoli, because it’s low in calories but still very filling.

How has losing weight changed your life?
Losing weight has changed my life so much. After losing over 100 pounds, I became a personal trainer and group fitness instructor so that I could help others with their journey. My weight-loss journey was featured in a leading fitness magazine, and I was able to inspire thousands with my story. So many people began to ask me about how I did it, so instead of retelling my story over and over, I wrote a book about it! Now my book, 100 lbs. Later, is available on Amazon! Thousands have downloaded it, and I sincerely hope that it is helping to make a difference in people's lives.

Do you have any advice for those trying to lose weight?
My best advice for those wanting to lose weight is to set a goal and write it down immediately. Be very specific about your goal, and visualize yourself at your end result. Keep this visualization in your mind, and do not allow yourself to quit or accept negative self-talk. Always remember that the journey is not over until you quit. As long as you don’t quit, even if you have setbacks, you will reach your goal!
